In May 2019 a tiny bunny was handed into UPV Balcatta after being found on the streets. He was not in the best condition and had chunks of fur missing from his little body. His nails were missing, and he seemed to be in great discomfort. UPV offered to desex him if Romeo’s would be prepared to take him in and our foster carer Donna put up her hand to give him a safe home and picked him up after his vetwork had been done. Rambo as he was named, recovered well from his vetwork and seemed to be doing well until approx. 2 weeks after Donna started caring for him. Donna noticed a cut on Rambo’s nose that wasn’t healing and was just increasing in size and looked like it was opening. Rambo was taken to the vet for a consult and the vet realised Rambo had an abscess from the tip of his nose stretching to his forehead. His fur and infection were peeled away down the length of his face. This was when Donna knew she had to call Andrea, this was serious. As euthanasia seemed to be the only way out for Rambo, it was authorized but the vet wanted to try and help Rambo. Even though it looked as if there was no way anything could be done for him, the decision was made to give him a chance and Donna took Rambo home. The vet flushed the infected area, put a collar on him, gave him pain relief and sent him home with Donna to keep him comfortable for the night. It was agreed Rambo would be back in the morning for surgery. The surgery went well but Donna’s heart sank when she saw Rambo. He was given pain relief, antibiotics and a swab was sent off to be tested to ensure the correct antibiotics were given. Rambo had a difficult and painful recovery ahead of him. The vet staff were wonderful. They allowed Rambo to be dropped off during the day to be looked after while Donna was at work. After work Rambo was picked up and taken home, to return the next day for the next couple of days. With the actual surgery they were able to stitch the gap closed except for a tiny bit near his forehead the size of a 5c piece. Donna had to rub solosite on it every morning and rub it off again in the evening to cause the wound to bleed to encourage healing from underneath the wound. Rambo was unable to blink due to the skin between his eyes being pulled closed. Rambo required eye cream and drops being administered to his eyes to keep them moist until the skin stretched, and he could blink again. Rambo didn’t seem bothered by this at all. Rambo healed very quickly and before long the beautiful bunny that was not visible in the state, he was found could show himself. UPV named him Mr Nubbins due to him missing the ends of his toes. Andrea requested a name change suitable for a warrior bunny and he was named Rambo because no matter how much of a mess his little body was in, he just kept on fighting. Rambo had found his forever home with Donna and her hubby Mark and not long after, Rambo met another warrior bunny, Kisses, fighting off a terrible infection and they became bonded buddies. It is thought that Rambo had been grabbed by a predator, possibly a cat, and was dragged off. Rambo had to have fought hard to free himself, which would account for the chunks of fur missing off his back and the state his feet were in when he was found. The predator had possibly pierced the top of Rambo’s head with a claw that started off the infection which then travelled down his face until it broke the surface near his nose. Rambo is very fortunate, and we are extremely grateful to the vets and nurses at Huntingdale Veterinary Clinic that they were able to help him … if it wasn’t for their dedication, Rambo would not be here today..
